Like many academic and professional fields-of-work there are governing concepts that influence the Digital Preservation domain. This section briefly summarizes the work of Regan Moore et al and their research aimed a governing theory of digital preservation.
Infrastructure Independence
This concept looks at the establishment of protocols that aim to preserve the integrity and chain of custody while implementing the use of new technology.
Integrated Rule-Oriented Data System
This school of thought is aimed at understanding and respecting the preservation processes of an object and creating a data grid that considers the past preservation.
Assessment Criteria
Here the validity of the preservations environment is tested- the question “ is it working” is looked at and is measures against the Trustworthy Repositories Audit & Certification (TRAC)
Once these concepts have been examined then it is possible to formulate an overarching theory of digital preservation. Because preservation is seen as a communication from the past and to the future, the act of preservation takes on a more meaningful role and therefore the analysis of the preservation methods used in the past must be replicated and or improved upon in order that valued items survive and carried over to future generations (Moore, 2008).
